One of the toughest decisions friends and I are faced with on a regular basis living in Galveston is where to eat. It never fails; we decide to go to lunch or dinner and end up with a 30-minute discussion about just where to go. There are so many options sometimes it is overwhelming, and the multitude of fabulous restaurants provides little incentive to cook at home.
Some nights, I wish we could just go to one restaurant for a little of the favorite there. And then hop over to another for something different. Sort of a progressive dinner out.
This is why I love Epicurean Evening. It’s truly a taste of everything wonderful Galveston restaurants offer. It’s a veritable smorgasbord of tastes you’re not likely to find anywhere else, at least not all under one roof.
The key to Epicurean is simple: Arrive early, eat all you can. As the evening progresses, lines will get longer. But if it’s something you’re dying to try, stand in line, get your serving and relish in the grand tasting experience. There are certain restaurants that will attract long lines, but overall, very few have lines longer than say 2-3 minutes, which in the grand scheme of things isn’t too terribly long to wait in a line at an event with a couple thousand people.
You have two options for enjoying your food. You can gather what you can on your plates and then find a seat at one of the tables set up. Or, as most of us end up doing, you go to one place, grab a bite, nibble on it on the way to the next booth, where you get your sample, nibble a little and move on, repeating each step until you’ve tasted everything around convention hall.
Don’t forget to pop by the beverage stations. There is a cash bar, but a number of beverage vendors also are typically on hand so you can sip the latest trends in adult beverages, and the under 21 varieties as well.
After about the second or third booth you hit, you’ll have mastered the delicate balance of holding your plate, utensils, beverage cup and napkin. It’s all about situating the beverage cup at the edge of the plate so you can hold both with one hand, freeing the other to deliver food from the plate to your taste buds.
I’m hoping this year’s event is easier on the seafood than last year (cursed with living on an island AND being allergic to all things seafood). But if not, there will still be plenty to sample and enjoy. So don’t worry if you have an allergy or are just a finicky eater. There is something for every taste, and when all else fails, you can make a meal on just the desserts alone. Yes, some restaurants bring their tasty treats. Rudy & Paco has been known to have samplings of its bread pudding, which if you’ve never had, you simply must sample. Gaido’s had its famous pecan pies one year as well. And the chefs at the major resorts in town are always conjuring up tasty treats.
That’s the best part of Epicurean Evening. It really is a true sampling of the island’s fare. From major resorts or major restaurants to the local favorite that has been feeding islanders for generations.
So Thursday evening, November 15, instead of having that never-ending debate of where to eat, head to Epicurean Evening and sample it all. How often do you get to do that?
