Holiday sights, sounds, smells and snow will fill the air at Galveston’s Moody Gardens from Nov. 18 to Jan. 1 during the tenth annual Festival of Lights. Santa Claus will parachute in Nov. 12 for the grand lighting of the mile-long, million-light trail, which is one of the largest and most popular holiday lighting events on the Gulf Coast.
Moody Gardens will commemorate the festival’s tenth anniversary with more than 100 sound-enhanced, animated light scenes along the trail as well as live entertainment, holiday films and the area’s only outdoor ice skating rink. Guests can also take pictures with Santa and choose from a selection of holiday films in the MG 3D Theater. In the spirit of tradition, Polar Express 4D will return to the 4D Special FX Theater for families to enjoy special effects like snow flurries and the delightful smell of hot chocolate.
The Festival of Lights will be open to visitors from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays between Nov. 24 and Dec. 17 and daily from Dec. 18 through Jan. 1.
“This event is a great family tradition, and we have enjoyed watching it grow over the last ten years,” said Moody Gardens CEO John Zendt. “We have incorporated new technology and entertainment to make this year’s Festival of Lights better than ever, and we look forward to celebrating the holidays with our guests.”
Families can also enjoy a winter feast at the Holiday Dinner Buffet at the Garden Restaurant or at the Imagine Christmas Dinner and Show at the Moody Gardens Hotel. This Imagine Christmas holiday musical combines fine dining and a unique performance for the ultimate holiday experience. Doors to Imagine Christmas open daily at 6:45 p.m. from Dec. 15 to 27. Admission is $49 for adults and $29 for children 12 and under.
Admission to the Festival of Lights is $5.95. With the purchase of a Festival of Lights ticket, ice skate rentals and tickets to the Aquarium Pyramid, Rainforest Pyramid, holiday MG 3D film, holiday Ridefilm, Discovery Museum and Colonel Paddlewheel Boat can be purchased for only $6 each.

Food Drive Fridays
The holiday season is often a time for sharing. Moody Gardens will offer the opportunity for guests to share with those who are in need with the Friday Night Food Drive. Every Friday night from November 18 through December 30, visitors can bring a non-perishable food item and receive 2 for 1 admission to the Festival of Lights. The food drive program will benefit Galveston County and Houston Food Banks.
“Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens has become a family tradition for many of our guests that come out every year to celebrate the holiday season with us,” said Moody Gardens President and CEO John Zendt. “We are pleased to offer an opportunity to enjoy the true spirit of the season by being together and helping others in our community as well.”
Festival of Lights is the Gulf Coast’s largest holiday lighting event, receiving more than 85,000 visitors annually. It includes a mile-long trail of more than a million lights and 100 sound-enhanced animated displays sparkling over the beautiful Galveston Bay.
