“Woman Sexually Assaulted on Cruise Ship!” Is that not enough to scare you away from cruising?
However, as the sensationalizing news media failed to retract this lurid headline when facts showed it to be more of a case of (shall we say) “morning-after remorse,” the undeserved “blot” remains on the cruise line.
Do actual incidents of crime occur on cruise ships? Unfortunately, yes – but fortunately, very rarely. Cruise ships are like small towns – the population consists of good people, and those who are, well – not so good.
Cruise ships do everything in their power to insure your safety – there is constant video monitoring along with live observation by onboard security personnel, crew members, and even by guests who may witness – and are more than willing to report anything suspicious.
How to keep yourself safe? Remember – a cruise ship is not your “Nanny.” It is not the ship’s responsibility to “coddle” you or to monitor or to dictate your behavior. A cruise ship simply offers you an environment to relax, unwind, enjoy good food, meet new people, see new places, and get away from the workaday world.
How to protect yourself?
Just because you’re on a ship does not mean you can throw all caution to the wind. Don’t do “stoopid” stuff – watch your alcohol consumption– be careful to whom you give your personal information- stay in public areas–and always be as aware of your surroundings as you would be in your own hometown.
Cruising remains an incredibly safe mode of travel – given the number of cruisers per year (latest estimates around 13 million) and the miniscule number of criminal incidents.
Lorraine is not intending to deter you from cruising – just encouraging you to remember that along with your “cruise clothes” you pack your good common sense!
