The production of “A Steady Rain” at ETC is a perfect example of the type of small, exquisite production you can only pull off at a community theater. Although “big name brand” productions pay the bills, we tend to forget that few famous playwrights started out as famous. Most had to mount productions in smaller community theaters well before they hit the bright lights of Broadway.
That being the case, Keith Huff’s dark and complex play is one that will require your full engagement both mentally and emotionally. Kevin Daugherty and his brother Pat are the only actors in a drama that weaves a compelling narrative about a tragic sequence of events that profoundly affect the lives of two police officers in Chicago.
Denny and Joey are beat officers in a tough Chicago neighborhood. Their relationship with both their jobs and each other are complicated. The issues that affect both are a close as their personal concern for each and as far reaching as the way each deals with diversity and race relations.
Unlike the 60 minutes from problem to resolution most of us experience during television dramas, this theatrical production has no quick and easy solutions. Both Kevin and Pat Daugherty do a superb job of painting a picture of law enforcement officers grappling with a host of moral dilemmas, personal problems and professional frustrations. As the play progresses, the quality of acting is at such a high level, that a sense of anxiety can be felt in the audience. Once again, the ETC’s intimate venue, combined with the talent of the actors, creates a complete suspension of belief. “You are there” as the drama weaves its way toward an emotionally charged climax.
It’s a tough, cerebral piece of theater for adults only. But well worth the trip.
“A Steady Rain” has a limited run at the ETC. The Dates are Friday January 11th, Saturday the 12th and the next weekend Friday, the 18th and Saturday the 19th.
All performances will be at Island ETC, 2317 Mechanic Street in Galveston. Tickets are $27.00 for adults and $22.00 for students and senior citizens. Special rates are available for groups of ten or more, as well as for police officers, firefighters, and city employees.
