The new film Warm Bodies is certainly something I bet you haven’t seen before. While depending on the irony of the script to make audiences laugh, writer and director Jonathan Levine hopes this zombie movie will warm your heart. Basically, the film is about an apocalyptic world where the majority of the humans are zombies. However, one particular zombie known as “R” isn’t like the rest, and begins to change when he sees Julie (played by Australian actress Teresa Palmer). The two get further acquainted when “R” kills and eats her boyfriend Perry’s brains, played by Dave Franco.
Dave Franco (younger brother of James) and the director of the film recently visited Houston to promote their new film. I had previously met and interviewed Dave at South By Southwest last year. We ran into each other as he was leaving the screening of a short film he wrote, starring him and his mom. Dave was also at the popular festival in Austin to promote the film 21 Jump Street. Levine’s last film was the well received 50/50, dealing with cancer in a very unusual but touching way.
“This is genuinely a really unique movie,” Levine said when I asked him what he hoped audiences would take away from the film. Franco says there is a preconception of the film that it is aimed at a teen audience. “This is for a much wider demographic,” he insisted. “It’s very grounded and it’s smart,” Franco said as he bragged on the director, who adapted the screenplay from a very popular novel.
The most interesting thing about Warm Bodies is how it’s loosely based on Romeo & Juliet - “R” can’t remember his name and Julie is a manifestation of Juliet. All the characters of the play are in the film in some capacity. John Malkovich and Rob Corddry also star in the film which hits theaters February 1st.
